The prize-winning Korean pianists MiJung and JungHee Park will perform a recital of two masterworks by Robert Schumann. MiJung will play the Fantasiestücke, Opus 12 (1837) and JungHee will perform the Kreisleriana, Opus 16 (1838). Tickets are $10 at the door.
MiJung and JungHee are sisters, and have followed similar paths. MiJung has earned both bachelor
and master's degrees at the New England Conservatory of Music in 2006 as a recipient of the Josephine
Murray Scholarship Fund at NEC. She is currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at
Boston University with Anthony di Bonaventura. This year JungHee received a doctorate in piano
performance from Boston University studying with Anthony di Bonaventura. MiJung began her music
studies at age four on both flute and piano. She studied the piano with Hye-Lim Kim and Jin-Woo
Chung at the Sun-Hwa Arts School, where she was selected the most excellent young pianist for 1996;
and in 1997, she came to the United States to study with Wha-Kyung Byun at the New England
Conservatory Preparatory School. JungHee began her piano studies at age four with her mother and
then went on to study at the Sun-Wha Arts High School and the Seoul National University. She earned
earned an Artist Diploma at the Longy School of Music, and a Master's degree (Pi Kappa Lambda) with
Distinction in Performance and Academic Honors as well as a Graduate Diploma at the New England
Conservatory. MiJung has won prizes in many prestigious music competitions in Korea and the United
States including the Kingsville international Isabel Scionti Piano Solo Competition in 2003, first prize
in the Musica di Pianoforte Competition, and prizes in the Se-Kye Daily News Competition, the
Cho-Sun Daily News Competition, and the Samick Piano Competition in Korea. In the fall of 1998 alone
she has won both the New England Philharmonic Young Artists Competition and the Concord Orchestra
Competition, as well as placing second in the New England Conservatory Concerto Competition. JungHee
has won many prizes in competitions, including first prizes in the Honors Piano Competition in 2007,
the Richmond Piano Competition in 2003, and honors in the Citta di Cantu International Piano Competition
in 1998 and the IBLA International Piano Competition in 1997, both in Italy. JungHee has also won
top prizes in many competitions in her native Korea, including first prizes in the Chopin Piano
Competition and the Pusan MBC Music Competition, and prizes in prestigious music competitions
sponsored by Korean newspapers: the Dong-A Daily News, the Jung-Ang Daily News, and the Se-Kye Daily
News music competitions. MiJung has performed numerous solo recitals, chamber music concerts, and
appeared as a soloist with many orchestras. Performances in Korea and the United States include
Solo Recitals at Williams Hall, Eliot Recital Hall, Tsai Performance Center, BU Concert Hall,
Honors concerts in Jordan Hall, appearances at Theatro Puccini at Meranofest Concert in Italy,
Young Artists Recital in Philips Memorial Hall, presented by the Brandywine Piano Institute at
West Chester University, and the Young Musician's Festival in Korea. JungHee has performed with
all the major orchestras in Korea, including the KBS Symphony Orchestra, the Seoul Academy Symphony,
the Dae-Koo Symphony, the Kwang-Joo Symphony, and the Seoul National University Alumni Association
Orchestra. She also performed solo concerts at the Seoul Arts Center, the Ho-Am Art Hall, the
Se-Jong Hall, and the Seoul National University. In the U.S., JungHee was a featured performer
in the Oregon Bach Festival in 1992, at the Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall in New York in 1995,
the Schumann Festival at New England Conservatory in Boston in 1998, and the Brandywine International
Piano Institute in Philadelphia in 2004-2008. In Italy, she performed at the Chopin Festival in Milan
in 1999, and the Meranofest International Academy in Merano in 2000.
