Brad Terry (b. 1937), has been playing jazz clarinet since the age of 14, taking his first lessons from the legendary Benny Goodman. Over the years he has performed with jazz notables including Buck Clayton, Buddy Tate, Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie, Doc Cheatham, Elliot Zigman, Lenny Breau, Red Mitchell, Roger Kellaway, Steve Swallow, and Willy Galison, among others. Parallel to his clarinet virtuosity, Brad has another instrument…his whistle! His whistling range, speed, tone and creativity are at least as impressive as his clarinet wizardry. A gifted educator, Brad ran a summer camp in Maine for two decades, and has led workshops and clinics in many countries and all over the States. He recorded with guitarist Lenny Breau, available on "The Complete Living Room Tapes" Art of Life Records AL1004-2.[1] An album recording his collaboration with Polish jazz pianist Joachim Mencel is called "All about Spring" Art of Life Records AL1006-2.[2]
In 1997, Brad was invited to give some workshops for young performers in Poland. One of these was an eleven-year-old boy named Mateusz Kolakowski, who was then studying classical piano. The previous year he had been the 3rd prize winner of the International Chopin Competition in Antonin, Poland, and in that same year he placed well in the Padereweski Competition in Kartuzy, and earned first honorable mention in the 30th International Competition entitled "Virtuosi per musica di pianoforte" in Prague. Mateusz learned how to play jazz very fast. With Brad and two other Polish students who played double bass and drums, Mateusz toured the US giving concerts, starting in 1998, playing at The Knitting Factory in New York City; The Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles, California; Sandy's in Chicago, Illinois; and the 7th Vail Jazz Festival in Vail, Colorado. In 2002 Mateusz won honorable mention in the Montreux Jazz Piano Competition, and subsequently he won high honors in other competitions in Brussels and Paris. In 2003, his solo recital in Prague was recorded by Czech Radio during the "8th International Festival of Jazz Piano", issued as a CD called "14th Spring". In 2007, another CD came out called "Ad Libitum. First Warsaw Jazz Concert".[3]
Brad and Mateusz have been performing together, as a duo and with other jazz musicians, for eleven years now. Their appearance on Thursday, July 23 is their only concert in Boston this year. The first set starts at 7:00 pm. Tickets at the door at $10 a head. Not to be missed...
