The Randy Pingrey Trio performs original works in improvised jazz and experimental modes. The ensemble consists of James Wylie on saxophones and clarinet, Jerry Sabatini on trumpet, and Randy Pingrey on trombone. This unusual instrumentation initially was inspired by the haunting, spectral beauty of Duke Ellington's original recording of Mood Indigo. Of particular importance to the ensemble dynamic are the textures and ensemble interaction of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, the timbral innovations of Lester Young and Dickey Wells, the spacing and silence in John Cage's work, and especially the hermetic creativity of Charles Ives. On October 1st, the trio will be premiering new compositions, written especially for the occasion and especially for the wonderful performance space, which are based on the melancholy impulse to find beauty and freedom in isolation and alienation. For an advance hearing of the direction in which the Trio is headed please play the third track, entitled "An Excuse for Laziness" at http://randypingrey.wordpress.com/2009/07/08/a-melancholy-science/ The three improvisers met while studying at New England Conservatory, and have performed together (although never in this exact configuration) throughout the Boston area. Entry is free, but donations are always gratefully welcomed.
