First Thursdays August Concert

Thursday, August 6th at 7:00 PM

Mandingueiros dos Palmares, the Boston Capoeira group started over ten years ago by Mestre Chuvisco, will perform in the next of the JP Concerts series on August 6th. Capoeira is one of the primary expressions of an African (Kongolese-Angolan) cultural tradition which has developed in Brazil. It combines elements of dance, martial arts, acrobatics, ritual, and musical performance into a fluid, dialogue-like "game" between two "players". Capoeira is perceived by the untrained eye as choreographed dance, but in reality there is no way for the "player" (capoeirista) to predict what the other "player's" next move will be.

Associação de Capoeira Mandingueiros dos Palmares is an internationally recognized Capoeira organization founded by Mestre Chuvisco and dedicated to the preservation of Capoeira and Afro-Brazilian culture. Mestre Chuvisco was born and raised in Belo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil. He is a student of Grão Mestre Dunga who was in turn a student of Mestre Bimba. The capoeiristas who will participate in this performance include Tabareu, Compasso, Leopardo, Sorriso, Cremosa, Andorinha, Elastico Mico Branco, Para, and Franchelli.
